With the goal of improving search results and the user experience, Google is now suggesting that structured data may be included ranking algorithms, despite previously claiming they wouldn’t be.

Recently, John Mueller, Google Webmaster Trends Analyst, said in a Google+ Hangout that over time, he believes that structured markup “is something that might go into the rankings as well.” Mueller explained that structured markup would help search engines more easily recognize what a page is about, though using it would not lead to an automatic rankings jump.

Structured Markup

Structured markup is a technical way to categorize data to help Google and other search engines understand what a page is about and to determine how it will display relevant data in results pages. Those who aren’t using structured markup can take advantage of a Google webmaster tool called data highlighter which will allow you to add structured markup to your site fairly easy.
